Why We Should Meditate

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Meditation is one of the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga. Meditation can help a person calm his/her mind down and continue the journey towards super conscious state. Attaining the real knowledge of the purpose of life is next to reaching God. Meditation is the technique that helps you achieve the real purpose of your birth – ultimate union with God.

If taken down to daily life, meditation is the best stress reliever. Meditate for 10 minutes a day to stay calm and collected throughout the day. Meditation immediately brings down the levels of stress hormones in your blood. Meditation also helps you bring down blood pressure. It can also act as a treatment to different diseases including heart diseases.

People try hard to manage the hectic daily schedule. People need some option to stay calm for at least a few minutes a day. Yoga meditation is the perfect method to quickly attain calmness of mind, identify the solutions for problems they face and to approach life in a more positive manner.

Meditation is the easiest method of concentrating your thoughts to a single point of focus. Almost all people achieve this focus at different times in their lives. You achieve this state when you are deeply involved in any activity. The activities can be as simple as playing with your baby or the time you are deeply involved in an office assignment. The point is – no other thoughts come to disturb you.

While meditating we achieve the state of deep focus. The experience of deep focus helps you solving your day-to-day problems and to manage your life better.

Meditation is relaxed and high alert state at the same time. It is heightened awareness without worries. Practicing meditation teaches you how to concentrate first on breathing, then on a specific point inside your body and then on everything you do.

What are Chakras? Kundalini Energy Chakras Explained

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Kundalini chakras are energy centers where kundalini energy rest in dormant state. The chakras are physical realities and one can locate seven chakras on one’s body along the spinal cord region. A chakra literally means a wheel. The chakras are in continuous spinning motion at set frequencies.

According to Kundalini concepts, these energy centers have lotus like petals. The one at the base (Mooladhara chakra) has four petals and the highest one (Sahasrara chakra) chakra has one thousand petals and resembles the light of thousand suns shining together. There can be many thousands of sub chakras located at the areas of lower chakras.

The seven major chakras are briefly explained below

1. Mooladhara Chakra (Sacral Plexus or Root Chakra)

Mooladhara chakra, shaped like a four-petal red lotus is located at the base of the spine. This chakra represents earth element and is responsible for material world.

2. Svadhisthana Chakra or Sex Chakra

Svadhisthana is of the shape of a six-petal vermilion lotus, which is responsible for the conduct of the person.

3. Manipura Chakra or Solar Plexus Chakra

Manipura chakra has ten blue petals and is responsible for the knowledge of physical existence.

4. Anahata Chakra or Heart Chakra

Located at the heart level and on the spinal cord, Anahata chakra is of the shape of a vermilion or deep lotus with 12 petals.

5. Visuddha Chakra or Throat Chakra

Visuddha (means pure) chakra is located at the top of spinal code. Its shape is of a lotus with 16 purple petals.

6. Ajna Chakra or The Third Eye Chakra

Ajna (means command) chakra is like a lotus of two white petals, situated in between the eyebrows. It is responsible for concentration and intelligence.

7. Sahasrara Chakra or Crown Chakra

Sahasrara Chakra is like a lotus with thousand petals. Its appearance is like 1000 suns shining together. This chakra synchronizes all knowledge and cosmic realization. This is the meeting place of Kundalini Energy and Siva. Awakening this chakra requires so much efforts and complete surrender before the almighty.

The chakra are awakened by either concentrated meditation or by clearing the energy path for the kundalini energy to uncoil from its dormant state. Kundalini energy awakening is recommended only under the guidance of a teacher.

Different Techniques of Meditation

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

A yoga practitioner may come across countless types of meditation techniques. The objective of the yogi is to identify the yoga meditation technique that is appropriate for him/her.

Yoga meditation requires you to concentrate on a focal point inside or outside your body. Some meditation techniques tell you to concentrate on void or emptiness, which is hard to achieve.

Meditation is not a thinking process in itself, but allowing free flow of thoughts, but on a focal point. Swami Vivekananda once said mind is like a chariot and thought is like horses. Controlling the thoughts in a certain direction is necessary to take the life in the right direction.

A yogi doesn’t suppress his/her thoughts. During meditation, the thoughts are naturally calms down take a finite shape. Deep meditation takes you to a state of super consciousness, which is called Samadhi.

The different types of meditation are:

Mantra Meditation
Trataka Meditation
Chakra Meditation
Raja Yoga Meditation
Nada Yoga Meditation etc

Different yoga meditation techniques tell you to take a comfortable meditation posture. Lotus posture is the preferred yoga meditation pose. There are other meditation postures too.

The person then concentrates on his thought. It is then time to concentrate on any focal point. Kundalini energy centers (chakras) or any point on, inside or outside his/her body is where the thought process concentrated.

The most effective mantra is OM. It is a single letter in Sanskrit language. The O is pronounced deeply like a long O as in go, show, low etc. M is pronounced after a long O. The sound can be something like ohm.

People who do not appreciate the universal sound of OM replace the mantra with numbers 1-2-3- Â…

Chant the mantra as you exhale.

The practitioner can also apply visualization techniques while meditation. Here instead of mantra, the yogi visualizes successful actualization of his/her life goals.

Mind as Pyre

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

According to yoga, a mind and a pyre have similar destructive qualities. Fear and selfishness leads to different bad thoughts and negative expectations. These all are emotions that affect our mind, all of which are destructive too.

Fear is the biggest enemy of man. It leads to all kinds of thoughts and worries. Selfishness also causes stress. Never allow any negative thoughts affect you. Yoga practitioners tell you to deal with the moment you are currently in. Deal with the problems at hand. Never worry about solving a problem that would occur ten minutes from now. Or donÂ’t think about enjoying your moment in a more fulfilling manner once you are out of office. Enjoy the task you do and find pleasure in whatever you do, even when dealing with tough problems.

It is just the same as worrying about things that are past. You canÂ’t change the minute that has passed by. Choosing how to spend this moment and minute will determine how will be prepared to spend the minutes that are coming your way. The important point is to do what is best for you at this very moment; it will naturally prepare your way for your future events.

This starts with thought process. We become what we think. Self fulfilling prophecies attack our mind in large numbers at different times. DonÂ’t fall prey to destructive thoughts.

According to yoga, mind and body are closely related. Aadhi (struggles of mind) causes vyadhi (stuggle of body that is disease). Negative thoughts weaken all our body and perceiving power.

According to yoga, each type of thought produces a specific kind of liquid in our body. (Modern science says living things produce certain hormones or pheromones while triggered some emotion like fear, pleasantness, appetite, etc). The liquids produced as a result of thoughts (comparable to adrenaline rush in animals and humans when afraid or something or got excited) can negatively or positively affect the body.

When these liquids accumulate in our body, it causes several diseases. Therefore it is necessary to keep yourselves away from Kama-kroda vicharas (sexual or angry thoughts).

The result of such thoughts will be accumulation of negative energies in our body, which is destructive to both mind and body.

Kundalini Yoga and Kundalini Energy Centers

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Kundalini yoga is the method of awakening latent powers of super consciousness that are dormant in humans within their sushumna nadi or spinal cord. Kundalini is a form of energy (knowledge and consciousness energy) dormant, which can be awakened by different methods. Moving of Kundalini energy up the energy chakras or special energy centers in the sushumna opens the doors of knowledge and blissful divine experiences.

Though there are different methods of awakening kundalini, Raja Yoga method or meditation method is usually employed in awakening kundalini sakthi or power. This kundalini is compared to a snake coiled and sleeping within mooladhara chakra, the lowest energy center of sushumna, the spinal cord.

When arose, the energy moves up through the different energy centers through the spine to reach the seventh chakra. The conscious effort to awaken kundalini should be practiced only under the guidance of a kundalini yogi. The high spiritual awareness and enlightened state that one achieves by awakening may be beyond the control of the person. There can also be imbalances in the mind and body of the person, which a trainer can identify and appropriately rectify.

Practicing Kundalini yoga is not easy for anyone. People practicing this may be frightened by the experience of sudden energy flow through their body, the smell, touch and sounds they experience with awakening of kundalini. They also may be distracted by the energy flow they get.

Pranayama can be combined to awaken kundalini sakthi. Meditation is another method of awakening kundalini. Some methods of yoga employ harsh techniques to awaken the dormant power, while others just soothe the energy fields so that kundalini can enter the energy channel. Concentrating on kundalini energy field while practicing pranayama in a yoga pose designed for deep meditation can awaken kundalini energy very quickly. The person may or may not be able to handle the energy flow.

Many yogis believe it is not OK to awaken Kundalini without the presence of a teacher, while others frown down the idea and say it is OK to awaken the energy. There are different techniques of awakening kundalini energy. Know that it is serious psychic energy and inability to control the energy may lead to several problems including mental imbalances.

Tantra Yoga

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Tantra yoga or Tantric yoga is a combination of different yoga schools – Mantra Yoga, Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Laya Yoga – and concentration of all different knowledge – astrology, medicine (Ayurveda), psychology, geometry and every field of knowledge known to man.

Tantra yoga has wrongly been sited as divinity through sexual union, which is far from truth. The pushing of Tantra Yoga and sex together is only a means of ‘sales pitch’ and/or ‘personal interests’. Don’t fall to any wrong notions.

Tantra is expansion of life in all forms. Physical, mental and spiritual expansion of the person is the prime goal of Tantra Yoga. The pragmatic guidelines give a practitioner the directions for attaining fullness in all areas of life.

Different streams of knowledge are drawn together as a single unit in Tantra Yoga. Tantra yoga seeks to identify the rule that governs cosmic oneness or the connection between microcosm (human) and macrocosm (the universe). The Yogis use different techniques including chanting mantras, learning mind power etc to raise to higher platform to experience divinity up close.

This duality – microcosm and macrocosm – and the duality of opposite polarities were compared to male and female differences. Needless to say the text is written in an equivocal language, which left enough room for personal interests to personify in individual interpretations and translations.

In reality, Tantra yoga gave many tools to human kind including meditation techniques, pranayama and asana. A Tantra yogi sees body as temple and uses the powers of body to enlighten mind and spirit. A yogi keeps his focus on divine fulfillment.

The union is between physical body and cosmic oneness.

Tantra Yogis put their undivided attention on God or supreme divinity. In all their actions they see God.

A section of the tantra yogis broke apart and touted alcohol and meat consumption as more powerful ways of attaining divinity. Tantra yoga also means to utilize sexual energy, just like all physical energy towards attaining higher status of divinity. Tantra yoga does mean to awaken the male and female aspects within a person as a means of spiritual awakening.

Tantra Yoga is knowledge of all human knowledge and expansion of life in all possible spheres to identify the central cosmic revelation. When practicing, practice it with care.

Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

According to Jataka Tales (the stories that tell the life history of Gautama Buddha), Jeevaka is a legendry physician treated Buddha. He also treated King Bindisara, the father of Emperor Ashoka.

As Jeevaka completed his studies at the Ashram of his Guru, Aatreya, he was asked to present a plant with no medicinal value as his Guru Dakshina. Gurudakshina is the gift of offering a disciple gives to his teacher when his education is completed.

Jeevaka searched the whole of Sarlaka Mountain to find such a plant with no medicinal value. He returned to his teacher empty handed and told his guru that he was not able to give him a guru dakshina. He also said to his teacher that not only the plants, but also the smell, sunlight, and sound originating from the stream that passes mildly by are filled with medicinal power. Some heal physical ailment of humans, while others cure ailments of animals or plants. Some are good for curing any mental condition.

Then Guru Aatreya smiled at him and said “everything in this world has its own significance”.

This is the basis of Ayurveda. When you think about Ayurvedic medicinal plants, think that every plant on earth is a medicinal plant.

The thing is to identify the method to identify and extract that medicinal power for appropriate use.

Same species of plants growing at different places can have different medicinal values. For example the plants growing in Himalayas will not be the same as the ones growing in Agastya hills of Kerala. The natural habitat, climate, available minerals, presence of other plants and trees, etc have influence on the medicinal properties of plants. This may not be primarily identifiable, but it is a fact there is at least a minor difference in the medicinal property of same species plants growing in different locations.

Cultivation of medicinal plants has picked up speed. In India and in places outside India there is large-scale cultivation of medicinal plants. Using of chemical fertilizers is a strict no-no for medicinal plant cultivation. It is also to be noted it is not possible to recreate the natural surroundings at which a medicinal plant grows in a different location.

Keep the story of Jeevaka and his Teacher, Guru Aatreya in mind, whenever you hear the term Ayurvedic medicinal plants or Ayurvedic medicinal herbs.

The following is a (naturally) incomplete list of medicinal plants and herbs used in Ayurvedic treatment.

Aloe Vera, Ayurvedic Herbs

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Aloe Vera perhaps may be the most popular Ayurvedic herbs from India in the west. Aloe VeraÂ’s primary habitat is South India, including Kerala, parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Aloe Vera is characterized by its fleshy leaves. The characteristic aloe Vera gel is obtained from the fleshy tissue of the leaves.

There are about 200 species of Vera, 12 among them are poisonous and 4 of them have medicinal properties.

It is primarily used to treat diseases affecting skin and for cosmetic purposes. Aloe Vera gel also has healing properties and is used to heal cuts, wounds, burns, inflammations, and ulcer.

Aloe Vera when taken internally helps in the regulation of digestion and flushing out toxins (ama) and improves the functioning of liver and kidneys. Since the health of blood and skin are closely interlinked, its internal application helps in better maintenance of skin tone too.

Ayurveda regards Aloe Vera as ‘woman’s friend’, because of its potential to cure irregularities in periods and menopause related problems in different ways.

Aloe Vera comes in the plant family liliaceae though it appears to be a cactus. There are different species – Aloe Barbados, Aloe Indica, and Aloe Vera are the main among them. In India it is known by the names Ghirt Kumari, Kattar Vazha (in Kerala), etc. Indian Alces, Lu Hui, Barbados aloe, etc are other names.
