Local Markets to buy Ayurvedic Herbs Fresh

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Local markets of Kerala sell fresh Ayurvedic herbs, usually harvested from the forests by tribal people. People from the villages also go into the forests to collect medicinal plants.

The medicinal herbs that grow in the forests possess higher quality than the herbs cultivated and harvested. This is because of the difference in temperature, soil texture, relative unpolluted environment and the surroundings in which they grow.

The herbs are usually dried. They are not preserved and have shelf life ranging from less than a week to a year. Herbs older than a year are not good for preparation of medicines.

Buying herbs from local markets in Kerala in most cases gives herbs of the highest quality. There are however black sheep in the herd, that would spoil the good name of Ayurveda by selling substandard herbs.

It is essential to know the local names of the herbs. It is also possible that same herb has different names at different markets in Kerala. Scientific names or even an image of the herb may not be sufficient.

It is imperative that you have the assistance of a person with local knowledge to purchase the right type of herbs.

Almost all grocery shops of Kerala sell Ayurvedic products like herbal soaps and shampoos.

The shops that sell herbs are called ‘angadi kada’. Angadi in the past used to refer to a village market. Pacha marunnu vyaparam (business of green medicines) is the board (in Malayalam) that you can expect to see before such a shop.

Acupuncture is a type of treatment originated and practiced in China, which has now acceptance in the west.

It is a technique of freeing Chi (also qui) energy by inserting needles at particular points of the body. according to the theories, this balances yin and yang or the opposing forces.

Chi (qui) is the energy that permeates everywhere. When yin and yang are in balanced state, chi flows freely. The free flow of chi marks the healthy state of a person.

There are about 500 acupuncture points on the body. Each point produces specific effects when needle is inserted.

Acupuncture is indicated for conditions like chronic pain, muscle spasms, anxiety, substance addiction, anorexia, etc.

Acupuncture practice is there in India too, but is not very much popular among the people of India.

Homeopathy (Homoeopathy) Medicine

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

The word homeopathy comes from two Greek words, Homoios (means similar) and pathos (disease). Just as the name suggests it is a method of treating a condition by creating similar condition within the body, a form of ‘like cures like’ theory.

Unlike allopathic system that treats the symptoms, homeopathy creates similar symptoms within the body by creating similar symptoms. The medicines actually create similar symptoms, but are given to the patients after a series of diluting processes.

By creating the similar condition, the body utilizes its vital power to treat the condition that afflicts the body.

Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician is known as the father of homeopathy and has coined the term homeopathy.

Hahnemann’s theory of treatment categorically challenged allopathic treatment, which involves suppression of symptoms of diseases – like lowering body temperature and giving pain killers.

Vitalism is the theory behind homeopathy. According to homeopathy diseases are caused due to disturbances to this vital force that animates human body.

Vitalism theory was later discarded by germ theory put forth by researchers like Louis Pasteur.

Relatively cheaper than many common systems of medicines like Ayurveda and Allopathy, Homeopathy promises to be a holistic curing system.

Homeopathy arrived in India in 1830 with Dr John Martin Honigberger, who started practicing homeopathy at Lahore (now part of Pakistan) in Punjab.

Perhaps it is in India that homeopathy has the largest base. There are 180 colleges and more than 7500 homeopathic clinics in India and there are over 300,000 homeopathic doctors in India.
