“Let food be your medicine…..” – Hippocrates (460-377 BC)

Diabetic is a killer disease affecting many people in the world over. It is estimated that millions of people will be affected by diabetics by 2025.

Our diet consists of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins and water. After the digestion in the stomach and small intestine, glucose, the end products of carbohydrate digestion is absorbed and transported to trillions of cells in the body, . Thus in the normal metabolic state there is a balance between the amount of glucose absorbed from the intestine, its level in the blood and its utilization by the cells.

The metabolic process in a cell is very complex and it is managed chemically, releasing the energy in the glucose by steps. In a thermal power station coal is oxidized by burning and the energy is used to generate steam that runs a turbine connected to a generator. In the cells the fuels are broken down chemically in steps and energy is released. The released energy is stored in a chemical called Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) and it is used as energy currency in the cells to do the work. The final energy production takes place in an organelle called mitochondria in the cell and the number of mitochondria in the cells depends on the nature of cells. Muscles will have maximum number of mitochondria as energy requirements are more in the muscles.

In diabetic condition, the glucose utilization by cells comes down and this causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas gland in the abdomen. It controls the use of glucose within the body.

The blood sugar level will rise if:

• the pancreas produces little or no insulin (Type 1 diabetesor insulin-dependent diabetes). It is usually seen in children and young people.
• the pancreas produces insulin, but it could be inadequate for the body’s needs and its effectiveness is reduced (Type 2 diabetes). This condition is also called insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes is also called non insulin-dependent diabetes. It tends to affect adults over 40 and overweight people.

There are also other types of diabetes like pregnancy diabetics and secondary diabetics.

Though Type 2 diabetics is seen among people over 40 years old, in the last 30 years a threefold increase in the number of cases are reported among young adults. There is an increase of obesity levels among young people which may have led to the increased cases reported.

However, obesity doesn’t explain the increase in the numbers of Type 1 diabetes in children.

Common symptoms of diabetes
Glucose is one of the body’s main fuels. When blood sugar levels rise and glucose is secreted into urine. This causes:

• increased thirst
• frequent urination
• tiredness
• weight loss
• Recurrent infections on the skin, eg boils.

Diagnosis

People with Type 2 diabetes often have:

• a family history of diabetes
• obesity
• increased blood pressure
• premature vascular problems such as heart attacks and stroke
• raised level of triglyceride (a type of fat) in the blood
• Impotence (erectile dysfunction).

Diagnosis is done by following methods

1. Glucose levels are measured in blood samples. This is done using the following tests:

• random glucose test: glucose levels are taken at a random time on two occasions. Any figure above 11.1mmol/l is a diagnosis of diabetes
• fasting glucose test: the glucose level is measured after an overnight fast and on two different days. Above 7.0mmol/l is a diagnosis of diabetes.

2. Glucose tolerance test

A glucose drink is given containing a standard amount of glucose (75g). Blood samples are taken before the drink is given and two hours later. The test is done after an overnight fast.

• A two-hour blood glucose level above 11.1mmol/l is a diagnosis of diabetes.
• A level below 7.8mmol/l is normal.

How is diabetes treated?

Diabetes is treated in two ways by diet and medicine.

People with diabetes who are overweight need to think of weight loss as part of their treatment.

• a combination of healthy diet and exercise
• medication with tablets and/or insulin.

There are different types of oral medication for treating Type 2 diabetes:

• some increase the amount of insulin secreted by the pancreas
• some increase the action of insulin in the body
• some delay the absorption of glucose from the digestive system
• some suppress a hormone called glucagon, which is secreted by the pancreas and stops insulin from working.

Treatment for diabetes depends on the individual. Along with medications and diet blood sugar level needs to be monitored to adjust the diet and medication.

Managing diabetes

In the long term, diabetes is monitored through routine check-ups by a doctor.

Pharmacological intervention on long term basis leads to other complications. So routine medical check is to look out for any evidence of longer-term complications in eye or kidney.

MEEISATCODE DIET

Many studies now show that good glucose control can significantly reduce or even stop complications. This means keeping the blood sugar level as close to normal as possible.

With this aim in mind MEEISATCODE, has been working on methods to block glucose absorption in the intestine in a natural way. Finally we saw the light in the tunnel have and developed a food product that will slow the glucose absorption in the intestine.

The product is made out of a particular type of wheat ground and roasted with stringent specifications. Some other cereals are added to it. To this dehydrated vegetables are mixed and packed hygienically.

Two or three tablespoon full of the product can make a serving of porridge. When this product is consumed, the digestion is delayed and also makes the food to move faster in the small intestine. These lower glucose absorption from the intestine thereby glucose spikes in the blood may be reduced.

Thus you can control your blood sugar by MEEISATCODE DIET.

Business plan

The product MRP is Rs.195/ – per 1 Kg pack. If anyone places order with payment in advance, then we will deliver it for Rs.150/- The minimum quantity to be ordered is 10 Kg. The product will be send by courier anywhere in India.

What is diabetes? How Kerala Ayurveda helps to prevent, cure and care Diabetes patients ? Simple Ayurvedic herbal home remedies, food and life style

Diabetes is a metabolic disease which results in high blood sugar or in other words it is a condition in which the body’s ability to metabolize sugar is impaired. Millions of people suffer from this disease all over the world. The change in lifestyle and food habits has led to an increase in the number of people suffering from diabetes day by day. Metabolism is the process by which the body uses the digested food for growth and energy. Most of the food we eat is converted into glucose and is moved to the cells. This process is aided by insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Insulin helps the cells in the liver, muscle and fat tissue to convert and store glucose in the blood as glycogen. Diabetes arise when the amount of insulin produced by the body is less or when body do not respond to the insulin that is produced by the pancreas. Insulin helps the cells in the liver, muscle and fat tissue to convert and store glucose in the blood as glycogen. Diabetes can be classified mainly as

Types of diabetes

Type 1 diabetes – This type of diabetes occurs when the body fails to produce insulin.

Type 2 diabetes – This condition occurs when the cells fail to utilize the insulin that is produced in the body. This may be combined with insulin deficiency also. Type2 diabetes used to be common with older adults but now it is developing at all ages. Lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, stress and tension all contribute to this disease.

Gestational diabetes in pregnant woman.
Gestational diabetes occur in woman during pregnancy. This may be due to defective responsiveness or inadequate secretion of insulin. The condition may disappear after delivery but in some cases it may later lead to type2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes should be treated carefully otherwise it can damage the health of the mother and the fetus.

Symptoms of diabetics

Common symptoms involves excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, blurred vision, lethargy, poor wound healing, burning of palms and soles and sometimes excessive eating. Diabetic dermadrome a type of skin rash and frequent yeast infection of genitals and urinary tract infections are common with diabetic patients. Unexplained irritability, lack of concentration and agitation may also be exhibited by some patients.

Diabetes in Ayurveda.

According to ayurveda diabetes which is known as prameha or madhumeha is considered as a maharoga which means a major disease. This is because the disease affects almost all parts of the body. Out of the 20 recognized forms of diabetes 10 are caused by Kapha dosha, 6 results from Pitta and 4 are caused by Vata. (Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the tridoshas or three errors that govern the human body. The tridoshas should be present in a proper balance to keep the body healthy)

Ayurvedic treatment of diabetes is based on a widely different outlook. It includes medicine, change in diet and life style and even the mental aspects. This type of treatment requires the active participation of the patient as he should be ready to bring changes in his lifestyle and eating habits. While other systems of medicine aims at bringing down the blood sugar level, Ayurvedic treatment of diabetes is done in a much broader perspective. Ayurvedic treatment of diabetes takes into account the treatment of the disease as well as the complications caused by it. Ayurveda uses herbal medicines, massages and some metals in treating the disease.

Herbs to treat diabetes

There are many valuable herbs that are capable of controlling diabetes in an efficient manner. These herbs can be made as a part of regular diet to control diabetes in a natural way. Scientific investigations have proven that some of these herbs are very effective in controlling diabetes. Here are few herbs that help in controlling diabetes.

Bitter gourd juice should be taken in the morning before any other meals. It can also be used in powered form. Curry leaves. Curry leaves are found beneficial in treating diabetes.

The month of Karkidaka, the last month in the traditional Malayalam calendar falls roughly between July and August. This month is dedicated to lord SriRama. It is believed that sage Valmiki completed Ramayana in the month of karkidaka. People read Ramayana during the month of karkidaka. Monsoon is very prominent during this month. Due to climatic changes people are more prone to diseases during this month.

According to Ayurveda, the Malayalam month of Karkidaka (Cancer) is time for preventive therapies. Karkkidaka is known for rains, joblessness and diseases. Since Kerala (and India) is an agriculture society, the rain also forces people off fields and into their houses. During this month, the climate is very damp, with lot of rains. People are prone to diseases of various kinds. In other words, human body becomes extremely sensitive to pathogens. This period has long been identified as the period for preventive treatments and rejuvenation therapies. This is because, during this period human body will also be receptive to Ayurveda medicines.

The major therapies for Karkidaka month ( July 15th to August 15th)

Oil massages (abhayanga) of various kinds are performed during this season, according to the age of persons. These massages give physical strength of the body. The medicated oil also passes the medicinal content straight into the bloodstream. Massages are part of rejuvenation therapies.

Karkidaka Kanji (the rice porridge)

Karkidaka Kanji is basically rice porridge with medicinally valuable herbs added. Karkikada kanji kit is available for purchase from different Ayurveda centers.People take karkidaka kanji or the medicated porridge during this month which is believed to revitalize the body. The main ingredients of this porridge are njavara rice, malli, vizalari, karkokilari, cumin seed, aniseed, ayamodakom, fenugreek, aashali, putharichundaveru, varattumanjal, mustard seed, dry ginger, grambu, nutmeg etc. These ingredients are boiled in a pot. After it is cooked coconut milk is added. Saut 2 or 3 small onions in ghee and add it to the porridge.

Sukha-chikitsa (preventive therapy)

Sukham means healthy state and chikitsa is therapy or treatment. Sukhachikitsa is given to healthy persons, to prevent diseases from attacking. Massages (abhayanga) and specially prepared kanji (rice porridge) are part of sukhachikitsa.

Rejuvenation therapy

Ayurveda rejuvenation therapy is long process, lasting for many days, from 21 days up to 45 days. During rejuvenation therapy, the body is first cleaned off accumulated toxic materials (excess fat, chemicals, pathogens, etc). The accumulated body waste is called ama or body toxins. The body is then strengthened with special medicines like Rasayanas and with medicated oil massages (abhayanga).Rejuvenation therapy can also include full-scale panchakarma treatments. However, according to the age, physical and mental conditions, and other factors, the doctor may decide to omit one or more procedures of panchakarma treatment.

The month of Chingam (Leo) follows Karkidaka. Chingam is time of blooming, gaiety and general healthfulness. However, the month that precedes Chingam (karkidakam) is the month of diseases. Special Ayurveda packages for preventive healthcare and Karkidaka Kanji kits are available in Kerala Ayurveda hospitals.
