Are You Aware Today's Medicines Can Be Banned Tommorow?

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Allopathy and Ayurveda are systems of medicines that are always at loggerheads. The differences are visible on the very basic principles of these two systems of medicine. While Allopathy believes every disease can be cured by fighting the disease causing parasites with chemicals, Ayurveda firmly believes in utilizing the inherent strength and ability of the body to resist diseases and keeping itself healthy.

While Ayurveda medicines are aimed at balancing all the different systems of the body for a healthy state, Allopathy medicines aim at removing the symptoms of the disease.

While Ayurvedic is primarily a preventive medicine, Allopathy is a curing medicine.

Little research has been into Ayurveda in the past 2000 years. Thousands of researches have been on about Allopathy medicine in the past 50 years.

Ayurveda suggests usage of medicines or medicine combinations that will cure any disease while not causing any disturbance to other parts of the body system. Contrast it against allopathic medicine and it will be very hard to find Ayurvedic medicines or treatments that are at least half a way free from side effects.

Allopathic drugs that have been on market are quickly banned. Medicines banned at one or a few countries find flourishing markets at all other countries.

See a list of medicines that are banned in the West, but are freely available in Indian market at http://www.liveindia.com/news/zk.html.

Also see the side effects of a well circulated medicinal component called Phenylproanolamine or PPA as revealed in an FDA study at http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/ac/00/backgrd/3647b1_tab19.doc (MS Word document).

Yes, these medicines were once deemed safe and the use of which was in accordance with law. However, it is only later that the side effects of serious propositions come to the notice of medical fraternity.

Doctors prescribe and ordinary people use the drugs that come out of factories. Only after use by many thousands of people, do we know the side-effects were stronger than expected. It is not a wonder if some doubts the effectiveness and safety of a synthetic drug.

Look at the primary requirement of an Ayurveda medicine – a medicine must not bring forth another imbalance (in the body).

The world today acknowledges this difference and there is no wonder more people are attracted to the 5000 (or more) year old system of medicine that has for some time remained dusted under the history.

With this system of medicine, people don’t have to worry about outdated or banned drugs. One can believe they will be cured while they are cared.

Ayurveda curesÂ… while not experimenting with the health (and life) of individuals.

If you have not yet taken the steps to actively pursue the benefits of Ayurveda, it may be (excuse me, it IS) time to learn the wonders of natural method of care and cure that address not only the disease or the body, but also the person as a whole!

Ayurvedic Methods of Controlling Cholesterol and Protecting Heart

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Cholesterol used to be a word of terror for people. Cholesterol is present in cell membranes and transported through blood plasma.

Cholesterol is produced inside body at the liver. The food we take also contains varying amounts of cholesterol. The body has a system to speed up or reduce cholesterol production in accordance with dietary intake.

There are two types of cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein. LDL is considered bad cholesterol and HDL is good cholesterol.

When the levels of LDL become high in blood, the LDL cholesterol gets deposited in blood vessel walls. Arteries become thickened or hardened (arteriosclerosis) and block the free passage of blood. This increases blood pressure and leads to cardio vascular diseases including heart attack.

Another version of LDL is Lp(a). Lp(a) is a variation of LDL, which increase the risk of arteriosclerosis (thickening of blood vessels walls by deposition of fat).

Excess cholesterol levels in blood must be checked with a healthy lifestyle and diet. Daily exercise and keeping your body fit can help reduce LDL levels and increase HDL levels in blood.

Include more vegetarian food in your daily menu. Our body produces enough amounts of cholesterol. If the body is supplemented with excess food in the form of fatty good, you can expect an accumulation of unwanted cholesterol in your body. The extra intake and alter the natural balance in cholesterol production by liver.

Moderate use of alcohol does have a positive effect on blood cholesterol levels. If alcohol consumption gets out of control, it will bring many serious health issues.

Some Ayurvedic home remedies for excess cholesterol include garlic (Allium sativum), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), Guggul (Commiphora mukul) etc.

Natural Ayurvedic Remedy for Arthritis

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Arthritis or joint pains is caused mainly due to suppression of agni or digestive fire. This results in poor digestion, which leads to accumulation of undigested wastes in the body resulting in buildup of ama (waste matter).

Ayurveda classify arthritis into three – vata, pitta and kapha type joint pains.

Vata type arthritis is characterized by dryness of the joints.

Pitta type arthritis is characterized by swollen joints. Pain increases when you move your limbs. Joints feel hot.

Kapha type arthritis is characterized by stiff swollen joints. Joints feel cold. Move the limbs a bit and you feel relieved from pain.

Certain yoga postures are found to offer relief from arthritis pain. Choose the yoga postures that may be beneficial to you with the help of a trained yoga practitioner.

Detoxification processes including enemas and panchakarma are beneficial in treating arthritis. It removes much of the accumulated toxic wastes and gives relief to pain.

Ayurvedic Massage Oils Used in the Treatment of Arthritis

Narayana oil and Sahacharadi oil are beneficial massage oils that have the power to bring down arthritis pain. The effect of the oils depends primarily on your body type.

Narayana oil removes stiffness and improves mobility at limbs and is especially beneficial in reducing backache, sprains and joint pains.

If Sahacharadi oil doesn’t reduce the pain considerably in 24 hours of first massage, discontinue the application. If your body responds favorably to the massage oil, it will start showing results in less than 12 hours. This oil comes is rose in color and has special effects on Vata and Kapha type bodies.

Herbs useful in Arthritis Cure

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is useful in controlling pain and inflammation. Dried and powdered ginger taken internally is beneficial in reducing joint pains and inflammation. No side effects recorded.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) also has anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is a regular condiment for a variety of Indian culinary items.

Ashwangandha (Withania somnifera) has several benefits. Its roots are used in treating arthritis related pain.

Arthritis has its roots on digestive problems. Keeping body fit by leading an active life, practicing yoga, daily aerobics, taking only easy-to-digest food and occasional use of triphala as a mild laxative, etc are preventive steps against arthritis.

What is Holistic Medicine?

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Any system of medicine that aims at optimum physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well being of a person by creative use of any available methods can be termed to be a system of holistic medicine. Ayurveda is the prime example for holistic medicine.

Generally holistic medicine is defined differently as a separate system of medicine and as a combination of different systems of medicine.

Holistic medicine puts emphasis on the development of the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the person. It gives guidelines on lifestyle, nutrition, social behavior, emotional stability, and highest levels of health of physique and mind.

Educating the beneficiaries deeply about the benefits and different aspects of holistic treatment is one significantly important aspect of holistic medicine.

Apart from Ayurveda, the terms like alternative medicine, complementary medicine and natural healing too are associated with holistic healthcare.

Anything that is not involved in Allopathy is classified as alternative medicine. Some techniques employed to assist Allopathy treatment is generally termed complementary medicine. Natural healing has different meaning, which usually connotes nil use of medicines.

Today there are holistic medicine associations in the USA, Canada and other western countries. They emphasize holistic medicine as an art and a science of healing that addresses the person as a whole – the person is not simply body, mind or spirit, but a dynamic combination of all three.

Curative methods when needed are designed according to the requirements of the person and not according to the symptoms of the condition. Western holistic medicine identifies diseases to be causing due imbalance at physical, emotional or social level.

Balance is reinstated to reclaim health. The holistic medicine practitioner gives guidance to lifestyle changes.

In the west too, the modern concepts of holistic medicines are in no way different from the Ayurvedic principles set 6,000 years ago. Acknowledging the person and not treating a person as a piece of machine is important.

Socrates too has warned against providing treatment to isolated units.

A human being is made of different elements – the elements are not just blood, bones and muscles, but also sophisticated mental system that has a lifetime of experience. Holistic medicine is not just any treatment method, but a lifestyle.

What goes in comes out. This is true on human health too. What goes in will have its effect on not only body, but also mind. The thoughts one nurture, the kind of people one mingles with etc have an effect on his/her health just as what he consume as food. Holistic health involves balancing the thoughts and food habits too.

Ayurvedic home remedy to weight loss depends mostly on your physical type – vata, pitta or kapha. Vata type persons have underweight problems, as their digestive fire is not that active. Pitta types have moderate built bodies, but can become obese with gluttony. Kapha type persons quickly add on weight.

Home remedies to quickly lose weight

Take Indian gooseberry either fresh or dried and powdered. You may also include gooseberry in vegetarian preparations.

Take 300mg of shilajit daily. (Not for children below 12 years).
